Engineering from Mumbai University : 4 years of struggle that lead to an open ending.

Now that I have almost closing in on engineering, trying to make it through the final few days left,I feel I can be a qualified individual to write this blog about how has one of the most "Overrated" profession  in our country has been for me.

Disclaimer: If you are here expecting yet another rant post against engineering,Stop right here because this is no rant against engineering. I have utmost respect for the profession and irrespective of the mockery that the profession and its professionals suffer on media, this is the field which will require you to give it all you got just to secure passing marks.

Some exposition for my readers is that I studied from a tier 3(Not good at all in terms of basic requirements of  an engineering college) college in Mumbai University. There are many such colleges in Mumbai University and have been functioning in such unglorified way since the past decade.

Now when I landed in such a college only thing that can go right is if you could find like minded friend/friends.I was luck on that front as all my friends that i made during these 4 years are  fun loving and easy going people.

Just making friends isn't enough in engineering,There are other really important stuff that needs to be figured out.Your success in engineering depends on your learning curve and adaptability. Thanks to the heavy amount on the fee receipt and the look in our parent's eyes,Adaptability is what we gain quickly.

What about the learning curve??

Well it depends upon individual effort and dedication.I have faced a lot of setbacks but managed to cling onto the curve somehow throughout the course.

Being an average student throughout my life had its own perks,No one actually expects much out of you other than to do your thing and perform good at your level.Failing at catering to such bare minimum expectations is depressing and hurtful.

Semester I

Semester 1 was what really got into my nerves. With subjects like BEE and Mechanics passing seemed to be a farfetched task. The excellent students seemed to excel ,the strugglers seemed to struggle but what about us ? The average ones.I soon realised that engineering at this stage wasn't that merciful and it won't let me be in my comfort zone.Semester I pushed me out of my comfort zone and just like it was expected I failed in a subject. This brought me more closer to the realization that I might struggle through the 4 years. The thought sent me into a frenzy and I decided to take control under my hand.Next semester I cleared my backlog an passed the Semester 2 with an overall good CGPA.

A Traumatic Start

Just when I thought everything was going well,I was hospitalized and my condition escalated quickly on the negative side. I was supposed to miss my 2nd year because I was gone for a long time and my recovery time was estimated to be about 6 months. I am of a very competitive nature and I do not want to lose on all the hard work in put in last semester to get to this stage. After 2 dialysis and 20 days in ICU my condition started to improve and I started going to college in 2 months.
A quick realization that you get in engineering is that You ain’t the smartest man in the room. This hit me hard. You know, sometimes you think you are really good in what you do just because you were way ahead in it at school . In the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is the king.Things change in college, and you’ll find out there are way more intelligent and wise people than you. You are nothing. You need to learn.
Well it took my entire 2nd year to be able to understand what went wrong and how I could correct that.I started studying with my best friend during this time. This actually made me realize of my shortcomings and here I can say that she brought me out of that trauma and helped me be whatever I am today.

     THANK YOU

PS: This is not the end, there's more to my engineering life which i'll be writing in a few days and why did i call it an open ending will be explained in the next one ,so do subscribe .This one is just a one off post and i'll be happy to read your comments on it.
